~ The Morgan Horse ~
Educational Purpose
There are three major families of Morgans: Lippitt, Government and Brunk.
Though strict family lines are often adhered to by breeders, the benefits of crossing
one family with another has merit. The Lippitt Morgan was often viewed as a source of type and temperament and the so-called Golden Cross of the Morgan breed is a Lippitt Morgan bred to a Government-bred Morgan.
Before modern transportation, semen transport and video cameras
the "designer genes" aspect of breeding was limited to wealthier breeders or
farms in close proximity. The right pairing for the perfect cross was made from a
much smaller pool of local stock. Today's Morgan breeder is often faced with the
difficult decision of narrowing a breeding selection when building a herd and
planning foals.
